What Is Gamban and How Does It Work?

Most people who search for Gamban are not browsing out of curiosity. They are looking for something to put between themselves and a phone, a laptop, or a betting app that has already cost them more than money. If that is where you are tonight, this is a plain explanation of what the tool does and does not do.

Gamban is a piece of blocking software, not a treatment, not a cure, and not a fellowship. It has a specific, narrow job, and it does that job well. Understanding exactly what it is — and what still needs to happen alongside it — makes it far more useful.

What Gamban Actually Is

Gamban is an app that blocks access to gambling websites and gambling apps on the devices you install it on. It works on Windows and Mac computers, and on Android and iOS phones and tablets, which means it can cover a laptop, a work computer, and a phone all at once, provided each device has it installed.

It was built specifically for this one purpose. Unlike a general parental-control app repurposed for gambling, Gamban maintains a list of tens of thousands of gambling domains and apps, including operators that are not licensed in the UK. That last point matters, and we will come back to it.

How Does Gamban Work in Practice

Once installed, the gamban app runs quietly in the background. You do not need to remember to switch it on before you feel the urge — it is simply already there, blocking gambling sites and apps the moment you try to open them, on every device carrying it.

The install itself takes a few minutes. The part that matters more is what happens afterwards: Gamban is deliberately difficult to remove. Uninstalling it typically requires going through a proper process rather than a single tap, and on some setups that means contacting support directly. This is not a bug. It is the entire point — the whole design assumes that in a moment of urge, the person trying to remove the block is the same person the block exists to protect.

That friction is the feature most other apps skip. A blocker you can switch off in ten seconds, at two in the morning, when the urge is loudest, is not really a blocker at all. Gamban builds in a pause you cannot easily talk yourself out of, which is worth more than it sounds.

What Gamban Costs — and How to Get It Free

Gamban is normally a paid subscription. We are not going to quote a figure here, because pricing changes and we would rather send you to the source than get it wrong — check gamban.com for current plans.

There is also a free route worth knowing about. In the UK, GamCare runs a scheme called TalkBanStop, which combines one-to-one support with free access to the Gamban app. Eligibility and exactly what is included can change, so check gamcare.org.uk directly rather than relying on anything you read secondhand, including this.

Gamban vs GamStop: What Is the Difference

GamStop and Gamban solve different problems, and confusing them is common enough that it is worth being precise.

GamStop is free, and it is a self-exclusion scheme. You register once, and it stops you opening accounts with, or gambling through, any operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. It is not software installed on your device — it works at the operator’s end, by checking your details against the register.

Gamban works the other way round. It blocks access at device level, which means it also catches offshore and unlicensed sites that GamStop was never able to reach, because those operators simply are not part of the UK licensing system GamStop relies on.

Used together, they cover more ground than either does alone. Many people add a third layer on top: most UK banks now let you switch on a gambling block in their banking app, which stops card payments to gambling merchants directly from your account. Three layers, three different points of failure closed.

What Gamban Cannot Do

Be honest with yourself about this part. Gamban blocks access. It does not touch the urge underneath it.

A determined person can usually find a way around a blocker eventually — a different device, someone else’s phone, a workaround found on a forum somewhere. That is not a reason to skip using one. It is a reason not to expect a piece of software to do the work that actually changes things.

What reduces the urge itself, over time, tends to be support: talking to someone who understands it, structure around your days, and contact with other people who have been exactly where you are. Blocking tools buy you time and reduce temptation in the moment. What you do with that time is what determines whether anything actually changes.

Think of it less as a solution and more as scaffolding. Scaffolding holds a building up while the real work happens inside it. Gamban, GamStop and a bank block are the scaffolding. The support you build alongside them is the actual work.

Where Gamblers Anonymous Fits In

This is where a fellowship like Gamblers Anonymous fits in — not instead of a blocking tool, alongside one.

GA meetings are free, held right across the UK, and wanting to stop gambling is enough to attend. Nobody asks how much you owe. Nobody asks you to prove anything before you are allowed to sit down. You can find a nearby meeting through our directory of Gamblers Anonymous meetings, or search the wider meeting finder if you would rather look more broadly first.

Taking the First Step

If you take one thing from this, let it be this order: start with what is free. GamCare’s TalkBanStop route, GamStop’s self-exclusion register, your bank’s gambling block, and a Gamblers Anonymous meeting all cost nothing to try, and any one of them on its own is a real step. Together, they are considerably stronger than anything you would do alone.

We have gathered free tools, worksheets and further reading on gambling recovery in one place if you want somewhere to start looking properly.

Stepwise Recovery is an independent publisher. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Gamban, GamStop, GamCare, Gamblers Anonymous, or any twelve-step fellowship or mutual-aid programme. Always check the tools’ own websites for current pricing and eligibility. If gambling is harming you or someone you love, free support is available.
