Press Resources

Everything journalists, bloggers, and media professionals need to cover Stepwise Recovery accurately and responsibly. We are committed to open, honest communication with the media.

About Stepwise Recovery

Stepwise Recovery is a UK-based social enterprise creating substance-specific recovery guides built on the Twelve Step framework. Our guides translate time-tested recovery principles into clear, modern language for people struggling with specific addictions, including cocaine and ketamine.

Founded by people in recovery, Stepwise exists because outdated language in recovery literature is a barrier that costs lives. When someone cannot see themselves in the literature, they leave. Our guides ensure the life-saving message of recovery reaches everyone who needs it, in words they understand and with experiences they recognise.

Key Messages

When covering Stepwise Recovery, we ask that the following points are reflected accurately:

What we do

We create substance-specific recovery guides that use the Twelve Step framework in clear, contemporary language. Each guide addresses the unique challenges of a particular addiction while maintaining the proven principles that have helped millions recover.

Why it matters

The core recovery literature was written in the 1930s. The language, examples, and cultural references can create barriers for modern readers, particularly those dealing with substances that did not exist when the original texts were written.

What we are not

Stepwise Recovery is not affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, or any other twelve-step fellowship. We complement existing recovery literature; we do not replace it. We are not a treatment provider or medical service.

Our approach

Our proprietary Six-Lens Framework examines recovery content from six perspectives: Identification, Powerlessness, Turning Point, Spiritual Resistance, Passing It On, and Personal Integration. This ensures multiple entry points for understanding.

Anonymity and Responsible Reporting

Important Note on Anonymity

Our founding team are people in recovery. In keeping with twelve-step traditions, we ask that media coverage respects the principle of anonymity. Please do not identify individuals as members of any twelve-step fellowship at the level of press, radio, or social media without their explicit written consent.

We are happy to provide spokespeople who have consented to speak publicly. Please contact our press team to arrange interviews, and we will connect you with appropriate representatives.

When reporting on addiction and recovery more broadly, we encourage journalists to consult the IPSO Editors’ Code of Practice and relevant guidance from the Independent Press Standards Organisation regarding the portrayal of addiction and mental health.
