Derby Step is a Saturday morning Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at St Martins Methodist Church on Flint Street in Allenton, in the south of Derby. Starting at 11am and lasting an hour, it focuses on the Twelve Steps, the heart of the AA programme of recovery. It is a closed meeting, a term that puts some newcomers off unnecessarily: it simply means the meeting is kept for people who have, or think they may have, a desire to stop drinking. If that sounds like you, you will be welcomed. The church is wheelchair accessible. There is no cost, no register and no need to let anyone know you are coming; arriving a few minutes early is plenty.
What happens at a Step meeting?
The meeting centres on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, the core of the recovery programme, with members sharing their experience of working them. You are free to just listen if you prefer.
It says closed. Am I allowed in?
If you have, or think you might have, a desire to stop drinking, yes. Closed only means the meeting is reserved for people in that position rather than for family, friends or observers.
Do I need to book, and is there wheelchair access?
No booking and no cost. St Martins Methodist Church on Flint Street is wheelchair accessible, and arriving a few minutes before the 11am start is all that is needed.
