Step meeting.
The Wednesday session at Chester-le-Street's Community Centre on Newcastle Road, opposite the Civic Centre, is a step meeting: each week the discussion works around one of AA's Twelve Steps. It starts at 7.30pm and lasts an hour. This is a closed meeting, meaning it is reserved for people who have a desire to stop drinking or who think they might - a category that very much includes first-timers. Anyone coming purely to support or observe should try the group's open meetings at the same venue on Thursdays and Sundays. The community centre is wheelchair accessible, and the meeting is free with no booking or paperwork required.
What does a closed step meeting involve?
Closed means it is for people with a desire to stop drinking, including anyone unsure. Step means each week's discussion centres on one of AA's Twelve Steps. Newcomers are welcome.
I want to bring my partner - can they come?
Not to this one, but the same group holds open meetings at the Community Centre on Thursdays and Sundays at 7.30pm, where family and friends are welcome.
Is there a cost or booking?
No. The meeting is free and there is no booking. The venue on Newcastle Road is wheelchair accessible.
