On Sunday evenings at 7.30pm the Community Centre on Newcastle Road in Chester-le-Street - opposite the Civic Centre - hosts an hour-long open AA meeting. Open means exactly that: alongside people who have a desire to stop drinking, family members, friends and anyone wanting to learn about AA are welcome to sit in. The same group also meets here on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so there are three chances a week to get to a meeting without leaving town. The venue is wheelchair accessible, and attendance slips can be signed for court, probation or treatment requirements. As always with AA, it is free, and nobody needs to book or be referred.
Can I attend to support a relative?
Yes. Sunday's meeting is open, so family and friends are welcome to come along with - or on behalf of - someone who is struggling with drink.
Are there other meetings at this venue?
Yes, the group also meets on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7.30pm at the same Community Centre on Newcastle Road.
Is it free, and is there wheelchair access?
Yes on both counts. There is no charge or booking, and the community centre is wheelchair accessible. Attendance slips can be signed if needed.
