First Things First meets in Belper every Thursday at 7.15pm at The Cottage Project Methodist Church, just off Chapel Street, and runs for an hour. Named after one of AA's best-known slogans, it is a closed meeting: not shut, but reserved for people who have a desire to stop drinking, or who are quietly worried enough to come and listen. Anyone attending in a supporting or professional role is asked to choose an open AA meeting instead. Wheelchair access has not been confirmed for this venue, so check beforehand if that is important. There is no charge, no register and no need to let anyone know you are coming; arriving a few minutes early on a Thursday is all it takes.
Do I have to say anything at the meeting?
No. Plenty of people spend their first meetings just listening. You will never be made to speak, and only first names are used.
What does closed meeting mean?
It means the meeting is for people who have, or think they may have, a desire to stop drinking. Family, friends and professionals are directed to open AA meetings.
Is there wheelchair access?
Access at The Cottage Project has not been confirmed, so it is worth checking locally before travelling if you need step-free entry. Attendance is free and unbooked.
