Barnsley Step is a Friday night AA meeting at St Helens Church, 27 Laithes Lane, Athersley South, starting at 7.15pm and running until about 8.45pm. The focus is the Twelve Steps: each week the group looks at how the steps work in practice, which makes it a useful meeting whether you are brand new or have been sober for years. It is a closed meeting, meaning attendance is for people with a desire to stop drinking rather than for family, friends or professionals, who are welcome at open meetings elsewhere. St Helens Church is wheelchair accessible, and as always with AA there is nothing to pay and no need to book a place.
What happens at a step meeting?
The discussion centres on AA's Twelve Steps, the programme members follow to get and stay sober. You do not need any prior knowledge, and newcomers can simply listen.
Can family or friends come along?
This is a closed meeting, kept for people who have, or think they may have, a desire to stop drinking. Relatives and friends are welcome at AA's open meetings instead.
Is it free, and is the venue accessible?
Yes and yes. There is no charge and no booking, and St Helens Church is wheelchair accessible.
